Social media channels are now indispensable tools in every artist’s arsenal. We connect with our audiences, exchange ideas with other artists, keep up to date about our industry, get business proposals, sell our art and comics and have fun at the same time. It’s a magnetic vortex of constant activity, easy to get lost in. To learn about social media best practices applicable to cartoonists, hear about free tools and knowledge databases, hacks and inevitable pitfalls, join the session with the acclaimed Canadian cartoonist Doug Savage of Savage Chickens and Laser Moose and Rabbit Boy; and Ivana Filipovich, a communication insights and analytics professional at a Canadian university, and a comics author of literary renown in the Balkans.

The presentation will focus primarily on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but it will touch on other social media channels as well. Participants will receive a PDF with a list of tips and tricks after the session!

Kimiko Does Cancer is a graphic memoir about the author Kimiko–a queer mixed-race human rights lawyer–who is diagnosed with breast cancer at 25 and all the personal and professional concerns that come with navigating treatment and life in recovery. Kimiko confronts a lot of gendered assumptions about reconstructive surgery, finds she has little in common with people in cancer support groups, and (not one to freely share emotions) also finds people expect a level of intimacy from her they didn’t ahead of her illness.

In this pre-recorded video, artist Keet Geniza and writer Kimiko Tobimatsu talk through their top tips on collaborating on a comic and share some of the important lessons they learned throughout the creation of Kimiko Does Cancer!

As an amateur trying to get into comics, I remember feeling like there were an incredible amount of “rules” when it comes to actually drawing comics. Though these rules are only conventions, they can be an unnecessary barrier to making comics. In reality, comics can be as simple as placing two images next to each other; your mind fills in the blanks!
In “Drawing Comics “Badly”, On Purpose” we will put these conventions to the test by running through a few conventions and trying our best to do the exact opposite, in order to highlight the fluidity, openness, and fun of drawing comics.

Materials needed: Drawing materials (sketchbook, tablet, pencil – whatever!)

In order to get out of my head and practice loosening up, I’ve gathered a few trusty exercises that kick-start my day more positively. In this workshop we will explore the benefits of play, experimentation and imperfection as inspiration for new ideas!”
